Dreamworks uses the copyright laws and the legal system to protect its profits and its creative and intellectual property. See annual report below. The report shows that big companies like Dreamworks have to protect their products from exploitation and they will use the legal system and copyright rules to do this.
We also have been the subject of patent and copyright claims relating to technology and ideas that we may use or feature in connection with the production, marketing or exploitation of our feature films and other properties, which may affect our ability to continue to do so. Furthermore, from time to time the Company may introduce new products or services, including in areas where we currently do not operate, which could increase our exposure to litigation and claims by competitors, consumers or other intellectual property owners. Defending intellectual property litigation is costly and can impose a significant burden on management and employees, and there can be no assurances that favorable final outcomes will be obtained in all cases.
Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator of intellectual wealth.
A royalty is a usage-based payment made by one party to another for the right to outgoing use of an asset, sometimes an intellectual property. Royalties are typically agreed upon as a percentage of gross or net revenues derived for the use of an asset or a fixed price per unit sold of an item such as, but there are also are also other modes and metrics of compensation.
When it comes to 3D animation movies, Pixar and Dreamworks Animation. These are the two top franchises, with hits such as Toy Story and Shrek.
Of the two animation studios, one could argue that Pixar is the art house of computer animation. Wit mature, character-driven stories that both adults and children can both relate too.
If there's one thing Dreamworks knows how to do better than pixar, it's cranking out big hit after big hit. For example Dreamworks made Shrek then after this came Madagascar and the Croods.
